Roadway markings
Mini road systems with junctions, zebra crossings and parking bays for teaching road sense early, on trikes, bikes and on foot.
What are roadway markings?
A roadway marking is a mini road system laid in thermoplastic onto the playground, with lanes, junctions, crossings, roundabouts and parking bays for children to ride and walk. It teaches road safety through play: pupils drive trikes and bikes, cross at the zebra and learn to give way, which builds the habits that matter well before they meet real traffic. Roadways suit EYFS and Key Stage 1 especially, and they turn a stretch of tarmac into a set for pedestrian training, cycling practice and imaginative play all at once. They are one type of playground markings we design and install.
Why do schools choose roadway markings?
Road sense through play
Riding and walking a mini road teaches stopping, looking and giving way as habits, and children build them early because it feels like a game rather than a lesson.
Ready-made for pedestrian training
A zebra crossing and junctions give staff a set for practising safe crossing and road awareness, right there on the playground.
Play that keeps going
Trikes, bikes, prams and imaginative play all run on the road system, so it stays one of the busiest parts of the playground.
What types of roadway markings do we install?
Mini road systems for teaching road sense on trikes and bikes.
Road lanes and junctions
Centre lines, lanes and junctions for riding, driving and learning to give way.
Zebra and pedestrian crossings
Crossings with give-way markings for practising safe crossing on foot.
Roundabouts and mini islands
Roundabouts and traffic islands that teach flow, turning and taking turns.
Parking bays and features
Parking bays, a petrol station, road signs and other features that build out the scene.

How do we install roadway markings?
Survey, design, install and aftercare, and most of it is ours to do.
- 01
Survey
We measure the run of space you can give to a road layout and steer it clear of ball games and busy through-routes, so riding and walking stay safe.
- 02
Design
We draw the road system, lanes, crossings, roundabout and bays, to scale with its colours, so you can see the layout before we lay it.
- 03
Install
The system is masked and applied in thermoplastic on site. A full mini road usually takes a day or a little more depending on size.
- 04
Aftercare
Ready to ride once cool. We can add crossings, signs, bays or a whole extra section on a later visit as the space allows.
What do roadway markings cost?
Individual roadway markings cost from around £14 for a play parking bay up to about £420 for a construction zone, fitted. These are guide prices for each design, and the final figure depends on the design, the area and access. A complete mini road system, a full layout with lanes, crossings and a roundabout, is priced per site after a free survey, and we send a free design and a detailed quote, with no hidden costs and our price match promise.

Payment terms and any site-dependent charges, for example an aborted visit or extra cleaning, are set out in our terms.

Roadway markings: your questions answered
What comes with a mini roadway system?
A typical layout has road lanes and junctions, one or more zebra crossings, and often a roundabout and parking bays. We can add road signs, a petrol station and other features to build out the scene. You choose the pieces at design, and we scale the whole thing to the space you have.
Is a roadway good for teaching road safety?
Yes. Riding and walking a mini road turns stopping, looking and giving way into habits, and the zebra crossing gives staff a ready set for practising safe crossing. Children learn the routines through play, which lands far earlier than being told, well before they meet real traffic.
What age group are roadways best for?
They suit EYFS and Key Stage 1 particularly well, because riding trikes and bikes and practising crossings matches where those children are. Older pupils use them too for cycling practice and imaginative play, and we pitch the complexity of the layout to the main age group at design.
