What are wayfinding markings?

Wayfinding markings are thermoplastic markings laid onto the ground to guide people around a site, from directional arrows and one-way system markings to footprints, keep-apart markers and hand-wash area markers. Schools, councils, workplaces and car parks use them to move people safely, with a clear instruction right where it is needed. Uniplay designs and installs them to suit your site and your colours, as one type of the playground markings we fit across the UK.

Why do schools and sites add wayfinding markings?

Clearer, calmer routes

Arrows and footprints keep people moving in one direction, so busy paths, gates and entrances flow better at the busiest times.

One-way systems that are easy to follow

One-way markings and arrows make a route clear at a glance, for children, staff and first-time visitors alike.

Safety reminders where people stand

Keep-apart markers, distance lines and hand-wash area markers put the instruction on the ground, right where it is needed.

Hard-wearing and anti-slip

Thermoplastic is durable, highly visible and anti-slip, and it can take foot traffic within minutes of being laid.

What types of wayfinding markings can we install?

Directional and safety markings, marked straight onto the ground.

Directional arrows

Floor arrows that show the way along paths, access routes and around the outside of a building.

One-way system markings

One-way markings and arrows that set a clear direction of travel around a site.

Footprints

Footprint markings that show people where to walk, or where to stand and wait.

Keep-apart markers and distance lines

Keep apart markers and distance lines that space people out in queues and waiting areas.

Hand-wash and sanitise area markers

Markings that point people to a hand-wash or sanitise area.

Safety lines, symbols and custom markings

Lines, numbers, symbols and custom safety markings designed for your site, including anti-slip step nosings.

How do we install wayfinding markings?

Survey, design, install and aftercare, and most of it is ours to do.

  1. 01

    Survey

We visit the site, look at the routes people take and where they bunch up, then agree the markings with you.

  2. 02

    Design

You get a free design showing every arrow, footprint and marker in your chosen colours before anything is installed.

  3. 03

    Install

Our own in-house installation team lays the markings in hard-wearing thermoplastic on your chosen day.

  4. 04

    Aftercare

We check the finish and tidy the site. Markings can be added to or refreshed later.

Wayfinding markings: your questions answered

What is the difference between wayfinding markings and signage?

Signage works at eye level on walls and posts, while wayfinding markings work at ground level. They suit places where wall space is limited, where people are looking down, or where you want a route a young child can follow. Many sites use the two together.

Which wayfinding and safety markings do you install?

Directional arrows, one-way system markings, footprints, keep-apart markers, distance lines, hand-wash and sanitise area markers, and lines, numbers, symbols and custom safety markings designed for your site.

Can you match our school or brand colours?

Yes. Our markings come in 18 standard colours, and bespoke RAL colours are available on request, so we can pick out your house colours. We show the colours on your design before install.

Will the markings be slippery when wet?

No. The thermoplastic we use has anti-skid properties that help prevent slips, particularly in wet weather. It is the same material we use for playground and roadway markings.

How long do wayfinding markings last?

Our thermoplastic markings carry a manufacturer's warranty of up to 4 years, subject to ground condition, and we have seen them last for over 10 years. Life depends on how busy the route is and the state of the surface, and individual markings can be refreshed rather than redone in full.

Do you install in car parks and workplaces as well as schools?

Yes. As well as schools, our safety markings suit car parks, pathways, access routes, warehouses and manufacturing spaces, and we have worked with local councils on public spaces. Our own in-house installation team travels from our Lancashire base to sites across the UK and Ireland.

How much do wayfinding markings cost?

Wayfinding and safety markings are priced per site after a free survey, because the figure depends on how many markings you need, the area covered and the state of the surface. We send a free design and a detailed quote, with no hidden costs and our price match promise. Prices exclude VAT.

How much disruption is there on the day?

Very little. Thermoplastic can take foot traffic within minutes of being laid, and we work around your day where we can.
