Real hopscotch playground markings installed on a school playground

Hopscotch Playground Markings

Hopscotch playground markings are durable thermoplastic hop grids, from the classic one to ten to themed and four-way designs, that get a quiet corner hopping, counting and taking turns within minutes of installation.

What are hopscotch playground markings?

A hopscotch playground marking is a hard-wearing thermoplastic hop grid heat-bonded straight onto tarmac, laid out as numbered squares children hop, skip and jump through in turn. Uniplay installs the classic one to ten grid alongside number grids to twenty, themed picture hopscotches such as a frog, rocket or snail for younger children, round spiral hopscotches and four-way crossroads versions for several players at once. Because the game needs no equipment and every child already knows the rules, a new hopscotch is in constant use the moment it cools, building counting, balance, coordination and turn-taking into ordinary break and lunch play. They are one type of playground markings we design and install.

Why do schools choose hopscotch playground markings?

Play that starts itself

Every child already knows hopscotch, so a new grid is busy the moment it goes down, with nobody having to explain it.

Counting built into the hop

A numbered grid turns break into quiet maths practice, counting, number order and sequencing, without it feeling like a lesson.

Fills the quiet corners

A compact 2.8m hopscotch fits the edges that otherwise sit empty, spreading children out and calming a busy playground.

What types of hopscotch playground markings do we install?

Durable thermoplastic hopscotch grids that get a quiet corner hopping and counting.

Classic 1 to 10 hopscotch

The traditional numbered hop grid children already know, the staple of any playground corner.

Number and counting hopscotch

Grids numbered to twenty or more that turn hopping into early maths practice at break.

Themed picture hopscotch

Frog, rocket, snail and caterpillar designs that draw in EYFS and younger children.

Spiral and snail hopscotch

A round, winding grid that packs a full game into a small, self-contained patch.

Four-way hopscotch

A crossroads layout for several children to play at once, good for busier corners.

How do we install hopscotch playground markings?

Survey, design, install and aftercare, and most of it is ours to do.

  1. 01

    Survey

We look at the spare corners and quieter edges of your playground, since a well-placed hopscotch often does most to spread children out and calm a busy space.

  2. 02

    Design

We draw the hopscotch designs you have chosen at the right scale with their colours, so you can picture the finished corner before we start.

  3. 03

    Install

Each hopscotch is masked and laid in thermoplastic on site. A cluster of hopscotch designs is usually completed within a day.

  4. 04

    Aftercare

The hopscotches are ready to play as soon as they cool. We can add more, or theme a set around your school, on a later visit.

What do hopscotch playground markings cost?

Hopscotch playground markings cost from around £175 for a standard one to ten grid up to about £695 for a four-way hopscotch, fitted. These are indicative guide prices per design; the final figure depends on the design, the surface and access. Adding two or three designs in one visit lowers the cost per marking, so we survey the playground and send a free design and a detailed quote, with no hidden costs and our price match promise.

Hopscotch Playground Markings: your questions answered

What is a hopscotch playground marking?

A hopscotch playground marking is a durable thermoplastic hop grid heat-bonded onto tarmac, laid out as numbered squares children hop through in turn. It needs no equipment, suits EYFS to Year 6, and is ready to play as soon as it cools.

How much does a hopscotch marking cost?

A hopscotch playground marking costs from around £175 for a standard one to ten grid up to about £695 for a four-way design, fitted. These are indicative guide prices confirmed on a free survey; prices exclude VAT.

How big is a hopscotch marking?

A standard one to ten hopscotch is about 2.8 metres by 0.8 metres, which is why it fits the spare corners and edges that otherwise sit empty. A four-way hopscotch needs roughly 3 metres square, and we plan the layout around the space you have.

What hopscotch designs do you offer?

Uniplay installs the classic one to ten grid, number and counting hopscotches, themed picture designs such as a frog, rocket or snail, round spiral hopscotches and four-way crossroads versions, so you can match the design to the age group and the corner.

Are hopscotch markings suitable for all ages?

Yes. The classic grid suits KS1 and KS2, while themed picture hopscotches such as a frog or rocket draw in EYFS and younger children. We suggest an age-appropriate design at the free survey.

Do hopscotch markings help with learning?

Yes. Hopping a numbered grid builds counting, number recognition and sequencing alongside balance, coordination and turn-taking, so a hopscotch backs up early maths and physical development in ordinary break-time play.
