Walking into the Future: Celebrating Walk to School Week 2025
This week, from 19–23 May 2025, schools across the UK are lacing up their trainers for Walk to School Week—a national campaign led by Living Streets to promote healthier, greener, and more enjoyable school journeys. This year’s theme, The Great Space Walk, invites pupils to embark on a five-day active travel challenge that’s out of this world .
Why Walk to School?
Walking, wheeling, scooting, or cycling to school offers a host of benefits:
Healthier Bodies and Minds: Regular physical activity improves fitness, reduces stress, and helps children arrive at school more alert and ready to learn.
Safer Streets: Fewer cars mean less congestion and safer environments around schools.
Cleaner Air: Reducing car journeys cuts down on emissions, contributing to better air quality.
Active Travel England reports that schools participating in the WOW walk to school challenge see a 30% reduction in car journeys and a 23% increase in walking rates .
Voices from the Journey
In a recent post, Active Travel England shared insights from pupils at St Oswald’s Primary School in York. The children expressed joy in walking and wheeling to school, highlighting the fun of chatting with friends, the excitement of scooting, and the pleasure of being outdoors. One pupil noted, “Sometimes walking can even be a bit faster than cars because there’s lots of traffic,” emphasizing the practical benefits of active travel .
Uniplay’s Commitment
At Uniplay, we champion initiatives that encourage active lifestyles among children. Our playground markings and educational games are designed to make physical activity fun and engaging, supporting schools in promoting health and well-being. We believe that by creating inviting outdoor spaces, we can inspire more children to choose active travel.
Join the Movement
It’s not too late to participate in Walk to School Week. Schools can access free resources and activity packs from Living Streets to get started. Whether it’s organizing a walking bus, setting up a scooter park, or simply encouraging pupils to take that first step, every effort counts.
